An orthopaedic consultation is most useful when the doctor has a clear picture of your symptoms, your history and how the problem affects your life. Here is how to prepare.
What to bring
- X-ray, MRI or CT reports — and the films or discs, if you have them
- Previous prescriptions, physiotherapy notes and discharge summaries
- A list of current medicines, including painkillers and blood thinners
- Details of any previous surgery on the joint or limb
Think about your symptoms
- When did the pain start? Was there an injury?
- Where exactly is the pain, and does it spread?
- What makes it better or worse — walking, stairs, sitting, rest?
- What can you no longer do that you would like to do again?
Your goals — walking to the temple, playing with grandchildren, returning to work — help shape the plan.
On the day
Wear loose, comfortable clothing so that the joint can be examined easily — shorts or loose trousers for knee and hip problems, a loose top for shoulder problems. Bring a family member if you would like support or help remembering the discussion.
Questions to ask
- What is causing my pain?
- What are my options, including non-surgical treatment?
- If surgery is suggested, what are the expected benefits, risks and recovery time?
- What can I do at home to help?
