Pregnancy brings many questions, and each stage brings new ones. Keeping a running list — on paper or on your phone — helps you make the most of every antenatal visit. These suggestions are a starting point; your own circumstances may raise others.

Early pregnancy

  • How often will I need antenatal check-ups?
  • Which blood tests and investigations are recommended, and why?
  • Which supplements should I take, and for how long?
  • Are my current medicines safe to continue?
  • What foods, activities or habits should I avoid?

Mid to late pregnancy

  • How should I monitor my baby’s movements?
  • Which warning signs mean I should come to hospital straight away?
  • What are the options for delivery in my case, and what might make a caesarean necessary?
  • Where should I have any recommended scans done? (Obstetric sonography is not offered at City Care Hospital.)
  • What happens if I need emergency care or blood during delivery? (The hospital has no on-site blood bank or ambulance — ask your doctor about arrangements.)

Preparing for delivery

  • When should I come to the hospital once labour begins?
  • What should I bring for myself and the baby?
  • What pain-relief options might be available?

After birth — postnatal care

  • How should I care for stitches or a caesarean wound?
  • What is normal bleeding after birth, and what is not?
  • Who can help with breastfeeding difficulties?
  • When should I return for a postnatal check-up?
  • When is it safe to resume exercise, and what are my family-planning options?
Low mood, anxiety or feeling overwhelmed after birth are common — and worth talking about.

Seek help urgently if…

During pregnancy: bleeding, leaking fluid, severe abdominal pain, severe headache, blurred vision, fits, high fever or reduced baby movements. After birth: heavy bleeding, fever, severe pain, leg swelling, chest pain or breathlessness, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby. Dial 108 in an emergency.
